On the night of July 2, the Russian army launched a massive attack on Kyiv using attack drones and ballistic missiles, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), 18 people were killed and 85 were injured, including two children. Kyiv City Military Administration Head Timur Tkachenko noted that damage and destruction were recorded in more than 30 locations across the city.

In the Darnytskyi district, five-, nine-, and 16-story buildings were partially destroyed, while two nine-story buildings were damaged in Pecherskyi and Desnyanskyi districts. Two private homes were also damaged in the Svyatoshinskyi district, while seven-, five-, and 16-story residential buildings caught fire in Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts. A hotel building also caught fire in the Shevchenkivskyi district, while a warehouse burned in Obolonskyi district. The State Emergency Service reported that 570 rescuers and over 120 pieces of equipment are working to eliminate the consequences of the Russian attack.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Russian troops launched a massive strike using «precision weapons» and drones against Ukraine «in response to the Kyiv regime’s terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russia.» According to the military department, the attack hit military industry facilities and fuel and energy complexes in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as military airfield infrastructure in the Dnipro, Poltava, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions.

In the wake of the Russian attack, the Polish Armed Forces scrambled fighter jets. The operational command of the troops noted that this measure was preventative and aimed at ensuring security and protecting airspace.

Prior to this, Russia launched a massive missile and drone strike on Ukraine on June 2. Then, too, high-rise residential buildings in several districts of the city were hit. Six people were killed and 64 were injured, including two children. On May 24, Russia attacked Kyiv with drones and missiles. Two people were killed and more than 50, including two children, were injured.
